Academy Program of the Decolonial Festival 2023

We were pleased to welcome the diverse academy program of this year's Decolonial Festival last week.

For example, we learned about the importance of sensitized and representative portrayal of Africa and Asia in the workshop "How (Not) to Report About Africa/Asia - Deconstructing Stereotypes in Media Representation." by Charlotte Ming (freelance journalist & photo editor) and Dominique Haensell (co-editor-in-chief of Missy Magazine).

Specificity and a humane approach to journalism were highlighted as important factors in avoiding stereotyped images of non-Western cultures.

Through the practical examination of German and English print media, workshop participants uncovered colonialist tendencies behind the supposed concept of “journalism neutrality”.
