Visualization and sonification refer to the translation of abstract data into a visual or acoustic form. The aim of this transformation is to illustrate complex interrelationships, reveal inherent structures and use data as a sort of artistic raw material for the visual and sound arts. The presenters of this round of the Hybrid Talks will be illuminating the concepts behind this translation work. Can analogies indeed be made between the visual and the acoustic? To what extent do scientific or artistic intentions complement or interfere with this transformation?

These are the questions that the following speakers will address (lectures in German language):

  • “Visualization of Cultural Data”
    Prof. Dr. Marian Dörk

FH Potsdam, University of Applied Sciences | Information Visualization

  • “Music for Mathematical Visualizations”
    Prof. Dr. John Sullivan

    TU Berlin | Geometry

  • “Transfer by Transformation – or: On the Perception of the Senses”
    Prof. Dr. Sabine Sanio

UdK Berlin | Sound Studies, Theory and History of Auditory Culture

  • “Sounding Data Streams”
    Jutta Ravenna

    sound artist, Berlin

  • “Synesthesia or Sonification?”
    Prof. Joachim Sauter

    UdK Berlin | New Media

The Hybrid Talks aim at promoting mutual inspiration and networking. After the presentations, we will continue our exchange across individual disciplines in a relaxed atmosphere.
