Canadian Barry Traux is the current Edgard Varèse Guest Professor of the DAAD in the Audio Communication Group at the TU Berlin. Until his retirement in emeritus status in September 2015, he was a professor at the School of Communication of Simon Fraser University in Vancouver (Canada) and taught acoustic communication and electroacoustic composition. Truax is a founding member of the research group “World Soundscape Project” and editor of the standard reference work Handbook for Acoustic Ecology (1978/99). He also published the foundational work Acoustic Communication (1984/2001), which deals with all the key aspects of sound, communication and technology. As a composer of electroacoustic music, Truax uses real-time implementations of granular synthesis, as well as natural sounds and soundscapes as material for his compositions.
