The two-day workshop “Inter- and transdisciplinarity – Conducting research between science, technology, art and society” is being offered on October 12th and 13th, 2017 by the Hybrid Plattform and the Center for Technology and Society (CTS). Interested parties can register until September, 10st.

Nowadays universities and academic institutions, their researchers and artists face multiple expectations: There is great pressure to innovate, an ever-increasing competition for financial resources for projects and the requirement to be able to participate in finding solutions to social problems by means of artistic or research activities. Funding organisations like ministries and foundations increasingly attach importance to cross-boundary solution development and explicitly require inter- and transdisciplinary approaches. All of this demands for new concepts and approaches in research and design, which will inevitably lead to a combination of different fields of knowledge and approaches. Cooperation across institutions and the boundaries of science and one’s own discipline however is far from a self-evident or easy task. It calls for resources, knowledge and skills that are rarely taken into account or promoted in academic and artistic education and practice.

The goal of this workshop is to offer knowledge in systematic examination, reflection and awareness based on the tasks and challenges that arise when putting together processes relating to the areas of science, technology, art and society. The workshop provides a theoretical basis for a better understanding of inter- or transdisciplinary research and tested methodological approaches for successful implementation. We also address the relevance of participation in such projects for one’s career. Overall, the participants will be enabled to find their own positioning and to act in the context of inter- and transdisciplinary projects.

The workshop is designed for researchers of all disciplines, as well as artists and designers at TU Berlin and UdK Berlin. In particular we are looking for post-docs, scientific and artistic staff, PhD students, fellows and project and cooperation coordinators.

The workshop will be conducted by Nina Horstmann (Hybrid Plattform of the TU Berlin and the UdK Berlin) and Emilia Nagy (Center for Technology and Society, TU Berlin). They each have extensive experience with inter- and transdisciplinary research collaborations.
